Which documents do I need for a residence permit?
- Passport

What is the asylum procedure like?

What are the requirements for naturalization?
Naturalization in Germany requires a number of prerequisites, which can vary depending on the individual situation. Here are the main requirements that must be met:
- Main residence in Germany
- The applicant must have his/her main residence in Germany.
- At least 5 years of regular and uninterrupted stay
- Shortened period to 3 years: If special integration achievements are demonstrated, such as outstanding school or professional achievements, vocational qualifications, civic engagement, or if the applicant lives in a marriage or civil partnership with a German citizen for at least 2 years, a reduction to 3 years is possible.
- Valid nationality or ID card
- Possession of one of the following residence permits:
- Settlement permit or permanent residence permit EU
- Residence permit or Blue Card EU (also including §§ 16a, 16d, 16e, 16f, 16g, 16h, 18a, 18b, 19c, 19d, 20, 24, 25 paragraph 3 to 4b or § 104c of the Residence Act)
- Residence permit for Switzerland or permanent residence permit-CH
- You are a citizen of the EU, the EEA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) or Switzerland
- Proof of language skills
- German language skills at least at B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and ability to communicate in everyday life in German without difficulty.
- Secured livelihood
- You must be able to support yourself and your dependents independently and may not receive any social benefits. There are exceptions (e.g. for persons who are unable to work for health reasons).
- No grounds for exclusion under criminal law
- You must not have any serious criminal record. In particular, convictions with a daily fine of more than 90 daily units or more than 3 months’ imprisonment usually lead to the rejection of the application.
- Ongoing criminal investigations can also lead to a temporary suspension of the application process.
- Commitment to the free democratic basic order and to special responsibility for the injustice committed by National Socialism and its consequences (confirmed by submission of a so-called declaration of loyalty)
- Certificate of naturalization course or “Living in Germany” certificate
In certain cases, e.g. with a qualified educational qualification in Germany, the requirement can be waived.
- Declaration of consent from the other parent for children under 16 years of age
For children under 16, the declaration of consent from the other parent is required, provided both parents have custody.
- Exceptions to the requirements
In individual cases, deviations from the listed requirements are possible, especially for physical, mental or psychological illness, disability, age-related reasons or to avoid hardship.
